Getting To, Not Having To: A Season of Gratitude

November is a time to reflect on what we’re thankful for. Family, friends, good health, and the little things that make our days better often come to mind. But what if we shifted our perspective on something we do every day? What if we started thinking about fitness and movement as something we GET to do rather than something we HAVE to do?
It’s easy to look at a workout as another item on our to-do list. We HAVE to get to the gym. We HAVE to make time for exercise. We HAVE to get the kids to practice or make it to volleyball after a long day. But what if we changed that mindset?

We get to move our bodies. We get to spend an evening playing volleyball with friends. We get to take a walk through one of our community parks, watch our kids play on the playground, try a new fitness class, or simply find a few minutes to move at home. These aren't just obligations to squeeze into a busy schedule. They're opportunities to enjoy movement, connect with others, and take care of ourselves.
At Valley City Parks and Recreation, we're thankful for the many ways our community can get active.
From recreation leagues and fitness classes to our parks, playgrounds, trails, and the Gaukler Family Wellness Center, there are opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to find something they enjoy. And wellness doesn't have to happen in a facility or through a scheduled program. It can look like a walk around the block, a workout in your living room, or a game in the backyard with your family.
We're grateful to be part of a community that makes opportunities for movement, connection, and wellness possible.
Instead of thinking, "I have to work out today," try, "I get to show up for myself today."
This month, we encourage you to pause and consider the things you get to do. Let's celebrate those opportunities and remember that movement is more than a task to check off our lists. It's something we can be thankful for.
